In October 2006 I had the opportunity to travel to Sierra Leone in West Africa with an organization called “Cameras for Healing” (www.camerasforhealing.com). This trip was definitely one of the best experiences of my life and it opened my eyes to a whole new world. I had never traveled outside of North America prior to this, so you can imagine the excitement I was feeling when the plane finally landed and my senses were turned upside down. The air, the smells, the radio, the vehicles, the language, the landscapes… just to name a few!

I’ve had the opportunity to continue travelling and every trip is always a fresh new perspective to see the world with brand new eyes. I’m looking forward to many new adventures and can’t wait to see what my eyes and camera will bring back home. Click Here to view all the photos in my Sierra Leone portrait series.

Canadian Music. East Coast Style.

I had the opportunity to experience the 2010 ECMAs in Sydney Cape Breton as part of the Hemmings House Pictures film crew. The guitars, the fiddles, the harmonies, the toe tapping, hand clapping, it’s an all around good time! I must say that the talent at the ECMA’s was incredible! I love the different styles of music that the maritimes produces- from celtic, folk, punk, country, blue-grass, there’s so many unique contributions to the musical heritage of the East Coast!

While filming at the Roots room I had a chance to check out Dwayne Cote and Duane Andrews. Wow! Their music really hit the spot! They delivered a handful of goods from scottish and gypsy melodies to fiddle and jazz tunes. I really got a feel for the ECMA’s at that moment, I felt like I was digging around in my roots. That kind of music that you and your grandparents would be happy to listen to together!

I had a ball checking out the all-night shindigs at the Delta. What a great set up! I loved hotel room hopping to find a new band rocking out like The Divorcees in the New Brunswick room! There was tons of music lovin’ people piled into these small quarters having a time! The only unfortunate thing was thinking of poor Greg trying to get some sleep on the level below the all night festivities!

All and all it was an event not to be missed… because you know…. there’s no time like the Maritimes!
